Nobel Peace Prize for IAEA was the wrong decision

Dear Sir or Madam,
the Nobel Peace Prize committee has made an important contribution to peace through the awarding of the Nobel Peace Prize since the year 1901. Organisations such as the "International Peace Bureau", “Amnesty International“, the “International Committee of the Red Cross“ or the “United Nations Children’s Fund”, and people like Henri Dunant, Carl von Ossietzky, Albert Schweitzer, Desmond Tutu or Nelson Mandela have all truly deserved the Nobel Peace Prize. But again and again there were also controversial and mistaken decisions. For example, we remember the Nobel Peace Prize for Henry Kissinger.

We consider your decision to give the Nobel Prize to the IAEA this year as a wrong decision, which devaluates the Nobel Peace Prize.

We want to explain shortly why we feel this:
At its foundation, the aim of the IAEA was defined in the following way: “The Agency shall seek to accelerate and enlarge the contribution of atomic energy to peace, health and prosperity throughout the world. It shall ensure, so far as it is able, that assistance provided by it or at its request or under its supervision or control is not used in such a way as to further any military purpose.“ But the construction of nuclear power stations, the production of plutonium (and other substances that can be used for the building of nuclear weapons) in nuclear power stations, and devices for the enrichment of uranium had the result that many more countries were able to acquire nuclear weapons.

The double faced nature of the IAEA
On the one hand, the IAEA is set up to prevent the military use of nuclear power. On the other hand, the IAEA as a UN-organisation encourages the proliferation of nuclear weapons by the extension of nuclear power to more countries. It is through the policies of the IAEA that countries such as India and Pakistan were able to develop nuclear weapons.

“Production of plutonium 'Yes Please'. Plutonium bombs 'No Thanks'”
Anybody who preaches long enough that the identical twins of atomic energy and nuclear weapons have nothing to do with each, eventually begins to believe his own tall tales. The nuclear proliferation that has been made possible by the IAEA through the trade and construction of atomic power stations endangers world peace.

Downplaying reactor accidents is part of the work of the IAEA
The staff of the IAEA includes lobbyists from the nuclear industry. While they have a great interest in the safe running of atomic power stations, they also have to downplay the dangers, risks and accidents. So it is not surprising that after the catastrophe of Chernobyl, preventing the economic downturn in the nuclear industry was an important aim of the IAEA. Anybody who promotes the use of nuclear energy also carries a real responsibility for the consequences of uranium mining for the so-called normal mode of operation of nuclear power stations, and for reactor accidents like Chernobyl and Three Mile Island. That is to say joint responsibility for illness, death and suffering. For this reason, the officers of the IAEA systematically disguise of the consequences of the Chernobyl disaster for health, environment and agriculture. It is appalling to see the power and influence that the atomic industry lobby has within a UN-organisation like the IAEA. Amongst other things, this has led to a de facto gagging of the World Health Organisation (WHO), which is not able to critically address the issue of Chernobyl.

We consider to decision of the Nobel Prize committee to award the Nobel Peace Prize for the IAEA in the year 2005 to be a mistake, which has not served the interests of global peace and security.

We ask you to avoid such failures in your deserving and important work in the future.

The IAEA promotes the use of atomic energy. We are currently collecting signatures on this issue. We send a copy of the collected signatures from our region. It shows the great scale of public opposition to this dangerous technology, which you honour with the Nobel Prize.

Yours sincerely,
